Birdhouse Repair: Labatt Park Custom Model 6

Last Details

Old chimney out, new chimney in.

Barry Wells rescued the old chimney w above flag attached. Phew!
I tip my hat!

The custom birdhouse has been through a pretty interesting transformation during the last two weeks. New roofs, fresh paint, lots of nails, a good clean up.... all part of the changes.

If this house was an ice cream sundae, it would only need the cherry on top.

Stay tuned.

White Pine is for Painting 5

Like Ducks in a Row

Shh - weet!

I assembled and painted five white pine birdhouses for this recent set and they are now all ready for perches and trim.

Now I'm thinking, "Do I co-ordinate the colours or go off into left field?"

I'll cut and sand all the trim and perches this PM, then decide.

More to follow.

White Pine is for Painting 4

Easy Days Ahead

Now that the last two pine birdhouses have been painted I can begin thinking about trim and perches for this colourful set (of five). More painting will be required but that only means I stand at my workshop - enjoying the breeze from a large electric fan - and juggle various paint cans for an hour or so.

Soon I will be back to work on the long, western cedar birdhouse production line (9 more of those are already assembled).

More to follow.

Birdhouse Trim and Perches

Wooden Spoons!

Somebody was listening when I recently said, "Don't throw out yer wooden spoons."

From every angle, spoons (and the odd fork) make eye-poppin' perchs

BW collected nine more for me. Several birdhouses on the production line will be very happy!

Birdhouse Repair: Backyard Beauties 1

Off the Wall

I have a half dozen birdhouses in my backyard and most need a bit of TLC. Three are on the back wall of my house and because I want to refreshen the stain in that area the birdhouses will have to be relocated. Might as well clean them up in the process.

The first to move and receive a cleanup is made of sturdy western cedar that was rescued from a local back deck reno. I noticed that the distance from the base to the entry hole was over six inches so I bumped up the thickness of the base before getting out the red paint.

I have found a new spot to place three to four birdhouses, so the relocation and restoration project will continue as time allows.

White Pine is for Painting 3

Three Out of Five

Two freshly painted houses dry outside the workshop

The weather has been mixed lately - hot and humid days followed by rainy, breezy days - but as long as the fan keeps working inside my shop, the production line will maintain a steady pace. As long as I can find room to move I will paint stock belonging to five white pine houses and steadily work toward completion.

3 of 5 look AOK. I'll make room to paint the last 2 ASAP

The white pine is planed on both sides and is easy to cut, sand, paint and assemble. Trim and perches will likely be finished by Friday. (I say that now. But I won't take bets!)

The Production Line - Cedar Birdhouse Models 8

Strike Up the Band, and Wooden Spoons - Voila!

Batch (of 3) on the left gathered dust until yesterday PM!

One has to return to a two-week-old photo (above) - way back to the beginning of this 'production line' series - to see a lovely set of three western cedar slat birdhouses (with white pine roofs) waiting for attention. Yesterday I blew off the dust and finished adding colourful trim.

I collect wooden spoons from a variety of sources and they always come in handy as perches. The fence slats were rescued from the curb-side the day before yesterday - during an evening walk. A throw-away wooden shelf will provide trim for another half-dozen birdhouses at least.

Together, the spoons and fences make these sturdy western cedar houses a little more interesting for my sharp-eyed feathered friends.

Don't throw away your wooden spoons. Mail them to Santa
Claus and he will get them to me on Christmas Day
